Three Creative Ways To Boost Your Salad
published to Health | Nutrition

Here are three creative, unique additions that will make your salad sizzle with flavor. Try mixing shallots, blueberries, and vegetable oils into your salad and not only will your salad come alive, it will pack an increased nutritional punch as well.
Shallots – An onion may not do wonders for your breath, but this type can do wonders for your health. Shallot onions have the highest phenolic content of all onions. Phenolic content refers to the high-powered phenol and flavonoid compounds that ward off serious, chronic illnesses and may prevent cancer.
Blueberries – Not only do blueberries pack a powerful fiber punch (almost four grams in only one-fourth of a cup) they also have incredible chemical benefits for your body. First off, a phytochemical contained in blueberries called polyphenol can prevent heart disease and cancer. Additionally, blueberries are chock full of anthocyanin and proanthocyanin compounds, which are believed to play a role in memory.
Vegetable Oil – The best dressings are the ones that are high in vitamin E, monounsaturated fats, and polyunsaturated fats. Virgin and extra virgin olive oil fit the bill, as do many vinaigrettes. The healthiest oils are those bottled in the past year.
So there you have it: shallots, blueberries, and vegetable oil. You probably don’t want to add them all at once, but they all have health benefits that can’t be denied!
