Sports Bras Don’t Minimize Bounce Effectively

published to |

Does it seem as though your sports bra isn’t doing its job, especially during high-impact activities? A new study claims that most bras don’t provide enough support - no matter what size your breasts are.
Researcher Joanna Scurr, a biomechanics professor at the University of Portsmouth, recruited 70 women with cup sizes ranging from A to JJ. She found that women’s breasts move a vertical distance of up to 8 inches during exercise. During jogging or running, breasts move 50% up-and-down, 22% side-to-side, and 27% in-and-out. The pattern resembles a figure eight.
Scurr found that encapsulation bras, which have molded cups, worked better than compression bras at minimizing bounce. She is working with bra manufacturers in Britain to design a bra that will reduce movement in all three directions.
Until the new bra is designed, women will have to make do with the bras that are available on the market. Many women swear by doubling up on bras while performing vigorous exercise. If you haven’t done this before, but it’s worth a try!
